A visiting environmental expert says Cayman has got to do something about the one million tyres tossed in its landfills, otherwise they could add to the fire problems at the dump.

“Actually I was very surprised to see that kind of landfill – I never saw in my life,” said Dr. Jim Parks, a Professor of Environmental Engineering at the University of Wisconsin – Madison.

Dr. Park is now collaborating with the Ironwood developers – those behind the  multi-million dollar project slated for North Sound and he believes using the tyres as fill at the proposed golf course is a great idea. “Most public concerns are environmental contamination, but actually tyres can remove pesticides and fertilisers and even some toxic chemicals,” he said.
